What Alice Walker Says Applies to You

In the last posting for you, Alice Walker’s wonderfully compassionate letter to President Elect Obama. Today, I have re-written it for you, as if she had composed it to you.

I believe what she says applies to you, dear one. Take it to heart.

Dear One,You have no idea, really, of how profound this moment is for us. Us being the people of Planet Earth. You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only to be struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear.

And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, Planet Earth is a different place.

It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of peoples of all continents. Knowing this, that you would actually appear, someday, was part of our strength. Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about.I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance.

A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your family. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men and women soon become juiceless and white-haired; we notice their family looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate.

One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.I would further advise you not to take on other people's enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain. Those feelings occur in all of us, not just in those of us who profess a certain religious or racial devotion. We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise.

However, as my mother used to say, quoting a Bible with which I often fought, "hate the sin, but love the sinner." There must be no more crushing of whole communities, no more torture, no more dehumanizing as a means of ruling a people's spirit. This has already happened to people of color, poor people, women, children. We see where this leads, where it has led.A good model of how to "work with the enemy" internally is presented by the Dalai Lama, in his endless caretaking of his soul as he confronts the Chinese government that invaded Tibet. Because, finally, it is the soul that must be preserved, if one is to remain a credible leader. All else might be lost; but when the soul dies, the connection to earth, to peoples, to animals, to rivers, to mountain ranges, purple and majestic, also dies. And your smile, with which we watch you do gracious battle with unjust characterizations, distortions and lies, is that expression of healthy self-worth, spirit and soul, that, kept happy and free and relaxed, can find an answering smile in all of us, lighting our way, and brightening the world. We are the ones we have been waiting for.

In Peace and Joy,

Alice Walker

You Can Learn the Magical Healing Panacea

You Can Learn the Magical Healing Panacea

FOOT REFLEXOLOGY

Recently, I needed some help with my bladder and prostate… too much information? I turned to my first love – Foot Reflexology to handle the problem.
Really, my first love is magic. But when I first met Foot Reflexology back in 1973, the therapist diagnosed all sorts of cool things that confirmed what the doctor had said. How did he know? I felt confident that reflexology was magic. I still feel that way.

Here’s why you might think Reflexology exhibits wonders

· You can heal yourself when you travel. This is crucial if you travel – it’s portable.
· You can heal and assist the healing of anything and everything you or a family member has. It is a true panacea.
· You can learn it easily. Suzanne taught our 5 year old to work on her. Hoo ha! Good news.
· It’s mysterious. No-one really knows why it works. Therefore, it’s cool.
· It feels good and fun to do. Some say they crave it.
· You will feel relaxed from its effects. Or, weirdly enough, energized.
· You can impress your friends with the magic.
· Quadruple the effects of the other therapy work you engage in. I made up that number, but it does make every other modality work better.
· You can stop colds and flu in their tracks. Help your family and friends.
· You can boost your immune system.
· You can diagnose problems at the very beginning making them easier to handle.

Dear Brother Obama,

You have no idea, really, of how profound this moment is for us. Us being the black people of the Southern United States. You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only to be struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, North America is a different place. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of Africa and of the Americas. Knowing this, that you would actually appear, someday, was part of our strength. Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about.

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed.

That it is within the reach of almost everyone.

I would further advise you not to take on other people's enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain. Those feelings occur in all of us, not just in those of us who profess a certain religious or racial devotion. We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise. It is understood by all that you are commander in chief of the United States and are sworn to protect our beloved country; this we understand, completely.

However, as my mother used to say, quoting a Bible with which I often fought, "hate the sin, but love the sinner." There must be no more crushing of whole communities, no more torture, no more dehumanizing as a means of ruling a people's spirit. This has already happened to people of color, poor people, women, children. We see where this leads, where it has led.

In Peace and Joy,

Alice Walker

Mind Altering Quotes

I have one space left for my class FLOW: THE MAGIC OF MAKIN ART. If you want to come, call me 206.328.2073. You can read more about it and get on the email notification list here

=> http://www.VitalArts.net/events/

I though you might enjoy these quotes that I will be handing out in class on Saturday.

What spaces do they open up for you?

What new perspective?

QUOTES FOR THE CLASS

One of the surest tests [of the superiority or inferiority of a poet] is the way in which a poet borrows. Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn; the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest. - T.S. Eliot,

Good artists copy; great artists steal. - Picasso

Painting isn't an aesthetic operation; it's a form of magic designed as mediator between this strange hostile world and us. - Picasso A long, long time is needed to be young. -- Picasso I like to live poor... but with a lot of money. -- Picasso It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child. -- Picasso

Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone. - Picasso

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who transform a yellow spot into the sun. - Picasso

We painted like children in the face of nature. - Henri Matisse

When I started to paint, I felt transported into a kind of paradise. - Henri Matisse

My advice is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it's on your plate. -- Thornton Wilder.

If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete. - Buddha

In one of the spate of dance movies of a few years ago, the beautiful woman asks the gorgeous man, "Do you know how to dance?"

"I'm Cuban, of course, I know how to dance," he says.

This response reminds me of something I read about Bali.
They have no word for artist. And that is because, like the Cubans and dancing, they presume that if you are Balinese, of course, you are an artist. - Reflections from William

Blessings,

William

P.S. Speaking of great quotes here's a magic message from Uncle Mike --

If you ask me, Www, I'd say the main thing to keeping the main thing the main thing, is reminding yourself as often as you can of where the most joy will come from.
