Yummy Water? Fun Electrolytes, News from the Universe, Save the World

Are you sweating? It may be summer now where you live. If not, remember this for when it’s sweating season.

When you exercise six days a week as I have been recommending, you will sweat. You need to replace the fluids you sweat off. You can lose as much as a quart in a hard workout – drink water. Lots of it.

Don’t like water? Can’t stand the stuff? Hang on…

What else do you lose? If you peeked at the title of today’s piece you know. You sweat off electrolytes. Lick some sweat – it’s salty.

What are electrolytes, you ask? Mr. Dictionary says – 2. Physiology. any of certain inorganic compounds, mainly sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and bicarbonate, that dissociate in biological fluids into ions capable of conducting electrical currents and constituting a major force in controlling fluid balance within the body.

The purveyors of sports drinks like Gatorade suggest you will benefit greatly by using their products. Others say just drink water and your diet will handle the rest. The researchers are undecided.

If you don’t replace your electrolytes what happens? Since electrolytes affect your muscles, heart and nervous system, horrible things can happen. But not likely for most people.

If you do replace or maintain your levels of electrolytes, you will most likely feel strong and vital. You will feel peppy even in the swelter. It’s a good thing.

My favorite way to boost my intake is to use Emergen C, a powdered product that fizzes when you add it to your water. It contains the alphabet of electrolytes and one gram of vitamin C in each packet. My naturopath recommended 1-3 packets a day for my general health. I do fairly well at complying.

Suzanne mixes one packet into quart bottle of water and finds this makes the water yummier. Improving the flavor of water with a tiny bit of glucose, researches say, gets you to drink more water. And that’s a good thing. Try it.

(I get the Lite version of Emergen C with even fewer carbohydrates.)

Vitacost is my favorite place to get Emergen C They have the best price, selection, and service. You can find it everywhere though.

Since table salt, NaCl, is the big player in your electrolyte soup of your body, you have a simple solution to loss of electrolytes -- add more table salt to your food.

Be salty this summer,

William

NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSE

One of my delightful clients reported how much she enjoys getting the News of the Universe. It reminds her and inspires her. I agree. It is one of the few things I read faithfully.

If you aren’t enjoying the News from the Universe daily, you can have it emailed to you on a daily basis at no cost. Read my review.

Mike Dooley has just redone his site. It looks good.

Here’s one I got recently that might inspire you –

Funny, {!firstname_fix}, how when one links job satisfaction to financial compensation, they're never paid "enough." Yet, when they see work as a way to dance with life, meet new people, and unleash the creative tiger within, they become very rich, indeed.
Every kind of rich, {!firstname_fix}.

SAVE THE WORLD – ONE MORE LYTE

You probably know you can save a bunch of money by converting to compact flourescent light bulbs. You may know that if the USA as collective converted we would have no oil worries. You also probably know the quality of the light was sickly at best.

Well no more. Save the planet. Stop oil wars. Have good light.

Popular Mechanics designed a test pitting seven common CFLs against a 75-watt incandescent bulb. To gather objective data, we used a Konica Minolta CL-200 chroma meter to measure color temperature and brightness, and a Watts up? Pro ammeter to track power consumption. Our subjective data came from a double-blind test with three PM staffers and Jesse Smith, a lighting expert from Parsons The New School for Design, in Manhattan. We put our participants in a color-neutral room and asked them to examine colorful objects, faces and reading material, then rate the bulbs’ performance.

Read the article and uncover the winners.
